The Number Nine

A whimsical musing regarding the Beatles and the number nine is long overdue on this site, wouldn’t you agree? In fact, I don’t know why I have not done this sooner.

This blog’s namesake is due in part because the number nine has always been my “lucky” number. Ever since I was in 2nd grade. There is a story behind that, but I will spare you the personal nostalgia and get into the main reason I decided to call this blog site The Number Nine.

Nine was also John Lennon’s “lucky” number, and it showed up within his life and work quite often. I always took great pride knowing that, without advanced planning- John and I shared appreciation for the glorious number nine. I must admit, that I have always been slightly obsessed with the number nine throughout my life. When I first started to really get into the Beatles, about 12 or 13- I bought the Beatles White Album. ‘Imagine’ my delight when I tuned to Revolution #9 and heard for the very first time the repeating track loop “number nine, number nine, number nine…” it is a day I will never forget.

“Revolution 9 was an unconscious picture of what I actually think will happen when it happens; just like a drawing of a revolution. All the thing was made with loops. I had about 30 loops going, fed them onto one basic track. I was getting classical tapes, going upstairs and chopping them up, making it backwards and things like that, to get the sound effects. One thing was an engineer’s testing voice saying, ‘This is EMI test series number nine’. I just cut up whatever he said and I’d number nine it. Nine turned out to be my birthday and my lucky number and everything. I didn’t realise it: it was just so funny the voice saying, ‘number nine’; it was like a joke, bringing number nine into it all the time, that’s all it was.” -John Lennon Rolling Stone 1970.

The Beatles bible states John’s fascination with the number nine as an obsession. I tend to agree, used in numerous places within the Beatles compositions and beyond, the number nine became associated with the Beatles somewhere around the time of the white album release in 1968. They went on to record “one after 909” (which coincidentally was actually an older original Beatles songs, played in clubs in Hamburg.) and of course John Lennon’s solo effort, “number 9 dream”.  But the associations with this particular number and John Lennon go way beyond song titles.

  • John was born on the 9th day of October 1940. At 6:30 am (6+3=9)
  • The corresponding address of which he wrote “one after 909” was located at 9 Newcastle Road, Wavertree, Liverpool : all of which have 9 letters
  • Lennon traveled on the number 72 (7+2=9) bus to Liverpool Art College, where he was friends with Stuart Sutcliffe.
  • Paul McCartney  played a major role in John’s life. McCartney’s surname has nine letters, as does Sutcliffe’s.
  • The Beatles officially became so in 1960, and survived 9 years until 1969 when John left the group.
  • The Beatles’ first played at the Cavern Club on 9 February 1961.
  • Brian Epstein, The Beatles’ manager, first saw them perform on 9 November 1961. (9/11 or 11/9 depending on which side of the pond you are on).
  • The Beatles first contract with EMI was signed on 9 May 1962.
  • Their debut appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show aired on 9 February 1964.
  • John claimed to have met Yoko on the 9th of November, 1966 (another 9/11- but this date is actually erroneous).
  • In April 1969 he changed his name to John Ono Lennon. There are nine ‘o’s in the combined names of John Ono Lennon and Yoko Ono Lennon.
  • Lennon and Ono lived for a time in an apartment on West 72nd Street, New York City.
  • Their apartment in the Dakota Building is number 72. (7+2= 9)
  • The Dakota Apartment building is on the corner of 72nd street and Central Park west.  The entrance to the 72nd street subway station is right outside of the apartment building. (7+2=9)
  • Sean Lennon was born on 9 October 1975, John’s 35th birthday.
  • #9 Dream appeared on Walls And Bridges, John’s ninth non-Beatles album, and was issued in September, the ninth month.
  • The album’s cover featured a painting done when Lennon was 11 years old. It depicts a footballer with a number nine on his back. (Another 9/11)
  • Mind Games and Rock ‘N’ Roll, the albums released before and after Walls And Bridges, each contained nine letters in their titles.
  • John Lennon was officially pronounced dead at Roosevelt Hospital on 9th Avenue, Manhattan.
  • Lennon died on the 8th of December 1980 at 11:15pm in Manhattan, but many have argued that it was in fact December 9th at his birthplace of Liverpool. (Manhattan also contains 9 letters, as does Liverpool) – (1980 is a #9 year, 1+9+8+0=18 1+8=9).

“I lived in 9 Newcastle Road, I was born on the 9th October. it’s just a number that follows me around, but, numerologically, apparently I am number six or three or something, but it’s all part of nine.” -John Lennon All We are Saying

After John’s death, the Beatles continued on with the number nine theme.

  • Rock band was released on September 9th, 2009. (09/09/09)
  • The digital remastering box set of Beatles studio albums was also released on 09/09/09. (No matter which side of the pond you are on)
  • The Beatles Channel launched on SiriusXM on May 18 at 9:09 am ET. You can find the Beatles Sirius Channel at #18 (1+8=9 as does the launch date.)

Esoteric Significance of the Number Nine:

Besides all the correlations of the Beatles resonance with the number nine, the number is indeed quite significant and sacred in esoteric circles. Nine is important in a variety of ways, many of which have been detailed here by (linked). I have highlighted some of the more poignant points below for your enjoyment. I have linked the site above, as below- do be sure to check it out if interested.

THE Ennead is the first square of an odd number, it was said to be like the Ocean flowing around the other numbers within the Decad; no further elementary number is possible, hence it is like the Horizon because all the numbers are bounded by it. We find that it was called Prometheus, and “Freedom from Strife,” and “Vulcan,” because the ascent of numbers is as far as 9, just as the ascent of things decomposed by fire is as far as the sphere of Fire (the summit of the air), and Juno, because the Sphere of the air is arranged according to the novenary system, and “sister and wife to Jupiter” from its conjunction with the Monad. And “Telesphoros” or “Bringing to an end” because the human offspring is carried 9 calendar months by the parent. And teleios or perfect for the same reason, and also called “Perfect” because it is generated from the Triad, which is called “Perfect.”

Attention is called to its being an emblem of Matter, which, ever varying, is never destroyed; so the number 9 when multiplied by any number always reproduces itself, thus:—9 times 2 are 18 and 8 plus 1 are nine: and so on as below:

9 × 3 = 27; 2 + 7 = 9

9 × 12 = 108; 1 + 8 + 0 = 9

9 × 4 = 36; 3 + 6 = 9

9 × 13 = 117; 7 + 1 + 1 = 9

9 × 5 = 45; 4 + 5 = 9

9 × 14 = 126; 6 + 2 + 1 = 9

9 × 6 = 54; 5 + 4 = 9

9 × 15 = 135; 5 + 3 + 1 = 9

9 × 7 = 63; 6 + 3 = 9

9 × 16 = 144; 4 + 4 + 1 = 9

9 × 8 = 72; 7 + 2 = 9

9 × 17 = 153; 3 + 5 + 1 = 9

9 × 9 = 81; 8 + 1 = 9

9 × 18 = 162; 2 + 6 + 1 = 9

9 × 10 = 90; 9 + 0 = 9

9 × 19 = 171; 1 + 7 + 1 = 9

9 × 11 = 99;

The Nine Muses of ancient Greece were called daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (Memory), and were Calliope, poetry; Clio, history; Melpomene, tragedy; Euterpe, music; Erato, love, inspiration and pantomime; Terpsichore, dancing; Urania, astronomy; Thalia, comedy, and Polyhymnia, eloquence.

In John Heydon’s “Holy Guide,” 1662, we find that he asserts the number 9 to have other curious properties:—”If writ or engraved on Silver, or Sardis, and carried with one, the wearer becomes invisible, as Caleron, the Brother-in-law of Alexander, did, and by this means lay with his Brother’s concubines as often as he did himself. Nine also obtaineth the love of Women. At the 9th hour our Saviour breathed his last; on the ninth day the ancients buried their dead; after 9 years Numa received his laws from Jove; note the 9 cubits length of the iron bedstead of the giant Og, king of Basan, who is a type of the Devil, and there are 9 orders of Devils in Sheol (what we call Hell). It prevails against Plagues and Fevers; it causes Long life and Health, and by it Plato so ordered events that he died at the age of nine times 9.”

There are nine orders of Angels, says Gregory, A.D. 381, in Homily 34: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels and Angels.

This post is dedicated to the life and memory of John Lennon- wherever he may be.
