The Ballad of St. George and St. Michael

“Most things are left out you know, about what bastards we were. Big bastards, that’s what the Beatles were. You had to be a bastard to make it man, and that’s a fact. And the Beatles were the biggest bastards on earth.” -John Lennon Jan 21st, 1971 Rolling Stone

I was chatting with a friend of mine the other day about the early Beatles, and how they got to the ‘Toppermost of the Poppermost’ and what exactly they may of may not have done in order to get there. Many biographies have been published on the Beatles and their rise to the top, and seemingly as each new book tries to one up the hundred previous, we start to get a sense of what “The Beatles” were really like behind the scenes. Or do we?

I am sure you probably realize from the collection of Beatles rantings I have provided on this site, that this was not the first time I had discussed or thought about such things. There are many “official” Beatles stories that have just not been explained to my satisfaction.  All around weirdness and over-the-toppermost coincidences that are difficult to just explain away as mere happenstance- as they most often are. One of these stories pertains to the 1999 attack on George Harrison. What was the motive behind this attack? Just another lone nut assailant as the ‘official’ story gives us?

George Harrison’s Friar Park Home Henley-on-Thames

…on Dec. 30, 1999, a mad man attacked Harrison in his own house, nearly killing him.

At approximately 3:30AM, Michael Abram, a 33-year old native of Liverpool, avoided security by scaling the fence of Harrison’s Friar Park estate near Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire and entered the mansion by throwing a statue through a window, which woke up the sleeping Harrisons.

George confronted Abram, who was screaming at the spiritual Beatle with a knife in his hand. The 56-year old Harrison ran at Abram to try to tackle and disarm him. The attempt was unsuccessful, and George was stabbed repeatedly in the chest.

Did you notice those numbers? Probably just me, but when I see numbers like these repeated in such a way as to carefully pinpoint every detail out to the reader, it inhibits me to look a bit deeper. First thing that pops out to me is the year 1999 (nines come up so often within the Beatles legend I can’t help but notice the 9s straight away). If Michael Abram was 33 in 1999– that would mean he was born in 1966… (I am no mathematician, but I think I have this one correct). 1966 is a year that comes up frequently in the Beatles Mysteries- and here we have yet another reference (albeit casual) to 1966. Another curiosity, Michael Abram was from Liverpool.

Michael Abrams 1999

More from the above linked article:

“…The court heard how Mr Abram’s condition deteriorated after the solar eclipse in August last year and he felt he was on a mission from God… He developed this conviction after listening to the refrain “it’s gonna take money” from a George Harrison song, Got My Mind Set on You. It was by a process of elimination that he thought Mr Harrison was the Alien from Hell…
Dr Joseph said on Wednesday: “George Harrison spoke something backwards to him. He (Mr Abram) thought he was cursing him in the devil’s tongue. He realised it was all true and George Harrison was shouting at him, he was a witch.”

First of all, that “official picture” of Michael Abram after the attack has never sat well with me. It looks fake somehow. I don’t claim to be a photographic forensic expert in any way- but it has always just thrown up a red flag for me. Is that make-up?

So, now we have another deranged individual who has listened to former Beatle George Harrison’s latest hit (Got my Mind Set on You- on the Cloud 9 album) and this lead him to commit an attack on George. This is a very similar tale to both Mark David Chapman and Charles Manson… what is it about Beatles music that leads to this type of violent behavior? Perhaps this really is just coincidence- the Beatles were of the biggest stars on the planet… surely they were bound to attract these types of lunatics right?

The attack was admittedly downplayed by the Harrison family to the press, stating that George with his tireless wit while being removed from the scene on a stretcher  proclaimed “he certainly wasn’t auditioning for the Traveling Wilburys”. However, according to Dahni, George’s son- George died four times before making it out of the house. Stabbed over forty times, and could barely speak let alone crack jokes. Always the clean cover story right? Take a sad song and make it better. Even in a situation as horrific as this.

Interestingly, in the same statement Dahni also recalled;

” I was woken by Rachel, our housekeeper shouting, ‘Get up, get up! Something has happened.’ I have always been aware that something could happen to my parents, due to their fame and fortune. I am also aware of past circumstances involving other members of the Beatles. I got dressed immediately and I remember asking, `Are my parents OK?’ Rachel said nothing.” Full article here

Involving other members of the Beatles? Meaning more than one? More than just John Lennon’s horrific attack of a similar official motive and narrative? Hmm

Olivia, George and Dahni Harrison

A statement read out during Abrams’ trial in November 2000 recounted his movements.

“I retreated hurriedly to the bedroom, shouting at my wife, ‘Someone is in the house.’ My wife was saying, ‘Stay in the room,’ but I decided to look again… I noticed the intruder again. As I looked down to the room below me, I saw a person run from the kitchen. He stopped in the centre of the room and looked towards me. He started shouting and screaming. He was hysterical and frightening. He said words to the effect of, ‘You get down here, you know what it is.’ I could see a knife in one hand and the spear from part of the statue in the other.” Full Article here

The statue that Harrison is referring to was a statue of St. George slayer of Dragons-placed on the exterior of his Friar Park home, in which the intruder threw through the window in order to gain access inside the home. However in this somewhat-odd recollection interview, Olivia Harrison recalls the statue as being that of St. Michael (slayer of Dragons) and compared Abram to Beelzebub. But St. George is the slayer of dragons St. Michael is the leader of the army of God, and ultimate victor over Satan in the book of Revelation. Confused yet? I am. Let’s dig a little deeper.

Saint Michael the Archangel isn’t a truly a saint, but rather he is an archangel, and the leader of all angels and of the army of God.  It is also proclaimed by a statement in court given by George Harrison that Michael Abram  was holding a spear in one hand (from the statue) and a knife in the other. St. (Archangel) Michael wields a spear, while St. George also is commonly depicted with a spear- but also at times with a sword instead. Is it odd to anyone else that we are mixing up St. George (Harrison) and St. Michael (Abram) in this already odd  enough story…? Which is which and who is who? Which is the angel and which is the demon?

Later it was revealed that Abram actually thought he WAS the Archangel Michael, sent on a mission from God to kill the demonically possessed Harrison. In which case- what an incredible stroke of luck that this man happened to find a statue of St. Michael (or George) to throw through Harrison’s window!! It’s uncanny actually- a mentally-ill man in a psychotic state, who has never left Liverpool, traveled nearly 200 miles to an unfamiliar location, located George’s home, bypassed security, scaled a wall, found a statue of St. whoever, PICKED IT UP, threw it through a large window, took the statue’s spear and attacked George (who Abrams’ believed was the devil) with it. By the way- did you see the above image of George’s Friar Park Home? How did Abram know where George was in that incredibly large mansion? Another stroke of luck that he chose a window so close to George and Olivia’s bedroom I suppose.  Perhaps it is more symbolic than anything. Or perhaps this guy was incredibly lucky and incredibly ill. Or a bit of both. Abram was never convicted of the intrusion or attack.  He plead not guilty by reason of insanity and was released from a mental health facility two years later, a few months after George Harrison had died.

“Abram thought all four members of The Beatles were practitioners of black magic, Dr. Nigel Eastman told jurors.

“He is not somebody who wanted to kill, but he was driven to it,” Eastman said.

Jurors also heard that Abram believed he was Archangel Michael and had been sent by God on a mission to kill Harrison, whom Abram described as the “phantom menace,” a figure from the writings of Nostradamus.

Initially, Abram believed Paul McCartney was the phantom menace but, after listening to some McCartney songs, decided it was Harrison, said Dr. Philip Joseph, another psychiatrist.

Abram “believed Paul McCartney was in his head, tormenting him. He realized that it was George Harrison behind this, telling Paul McCartney what to do,” Joseph said.”

order-of-st-michaelAnother odd layer to add to this “glass onion” story, just a quick little curiosity – within the British Empire there is a chivalry order deemed The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George. It is at present awarded to men and women who hold high office or who render extraordinary or important non-military service in a foreign country, and can also be conferred for important or loyal service in relation to foreign and Commonwealth affairs.

The Order includes three classes, in descending order of seniority and rank:

  • Knight Grand Cross
  • Knight Commander (KCMG)
  • Companion (CMG)

George Harrison died from lung cancer a bit less than two years after this unfortunate incident.  Considering that he was stabbed multiple times in the chest, and suffered a collapsed lung- many have speculated that this attack may have antagonized the already receding cancer leading ultimately to his demise. There is also a very odd story revolving around Mr. Harrison’s final days- but that will have to wait for another time.

So, to reiterate- According to the official narrative, we are supposed to believe that Michael Abram, in a psychotic state traveled nearly 200 miles into unfamiliar territory to carry out his vendetta against George Harrison, whom he presumed to be possessed by a demonic force by the likes of Nostradamus’s “Phantom Menace”. Who was the phantom menace? Ironically perhaps, there is not a lot to go on regarding this character from the infamous Nostradamus quatrains.  However, in 1999 the year of the attack Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace was released in theaters worldwide- and carried a large scale marketing campaign behind it. Perhaps this was what Abram’s schizophrenic mind latched onto? The only date ever specified in Nostradamus writings, incidentally was 1999– which may be a coincidence, or perhaps not. The actual line is as follows:

Nostradamus Quatrain X:
The year 1999, seventh month,
From the sky will come a great King of Terror:
To bring back to life the great King of the Mongols,
Before and after Mars to reign by good luck.

However, being French- the first line is actually “L’an mil neuf cent nonante neuf sept mois,” which could denote September (which was the original seventh month- pre Gregorian calendar) which could then be interpreted as 9/99 (more nines) 9×3=27 and if you notice- the number assigned to this particular quatrain is 72 or 72/27 (2+7=9). I just found the numbers here interesting, probably nothing, but thought it deserved a mention.

Nostradamus with compass

From what I understand, The Phantom Menace (used in this way) is an anti-Christ figure, and that is what Abram saw in George. Abram, in his psychotic state saw himself as St. Michael and on behalf of God and the Angels felt it was his duty to bring down George the anti-Christ/ phantom menace. Paul was giving him instructions how to do this! (Does this make Paul God?) Definitely wacky. An awesome tale (and not awesome-good) but utterly fantastic as to defy belief. Articles that have been written and published online have since disappeared, the major leaps of faith we are subjected to about Abram’s journey to carry out his “mission from God” (or is it Paul?), the Harrison family steering around the severity of the matter, and the glossing-over of any real sentence for this clearly deranged individual all make me consider that there is more to this story. Could Abram have connections to the Beatles and/or George Harrison that we are not privy too? How did this happen? Why did it happen? Did George have any enemies? Could this be connected to John’s comment, that “a lot of things were left out-… The Beatles were the biggest bastards on earth”? As usual, more questions than answers here.  I plan in the near future to explore this idea further- as a follow up to this article.

But in the meantime; Do these two faces look at all similar to you?  Could they be related? What do you think, I would love to hear your thoughts below.

…To Be Continued…

  1. Diz: Can offer no opinion about your having gone over the edge. I did read the recent Rolling Stone interview with McCartney. I could find no break in continuity in his memories from meeting Lennon till Lennon’s death. He expresses memories of Hamburg that could only have been experienced by the real McCartney. Whatever the explanation for the Paul Is Dead fantasy and there must be one it is not that there is a replacement McCartney. For myself I would look as closely as possible into the Krays and Tara Browne. Also what is going on with Groovy Bob Fraser. For myself, it’s settled that McCartney lived through his reported death.

  2. I am glad you have come to that conclusion. I just received my edition of rolling stone magazine in the mail this afternoon, can’t wait to dig into it this evening.
I am interested in the “Paul is dead” continuing saga (it is a huge movement on the Internet at this time). But it is not the focus of my work here. I tend to lean towards the “Paul is A very interesting person” camp myself. He is most likely, two (or more) people in one. But I do agree with you mostly.
Tara Browne is another interesting subject that I will write about in time. I have so many article ideas- and so little time. Don’t worry, I’ll get there, I promise.
As for going over the edge, I wouldn’t doubt it for a second. But hey- at least you are here- reading my articles, that’s got to count for something right? And good to hear from you again by the way, always a pleasure to receive your thought provoking comments. Thank you.

    1. I agree it is unnecessary to concentrate too exclusively on any particular problem with the Beatles, still after I read the interview my opinion solidified. You’re articles are great, thoughtful and penetrating. We do have to speculate from time to time so nothing to worry about there. You’re doing great work Diz; as they say, I’ve got your back.

  3. I would like to talk to you dizzy about a video I stumbled across a few years ago, regarding the Manson family. It was home video footage of them sitting around talking, and I swear there is one scene with a person who looks remarkably like john lennon. I havent been able to find this video again, although I did comment on it at the time, great articles by the way.

    1. Hi Seth- That is very interesting. I have heard only rumors that indeed such a video exists, but your comment leads me to believe said video does exist!
Do let me know if you see it again won’t you? Thank you for reading. I appreciate your time commenting.

  4. So if he is not Rory, or his son, then why put the two photos together? These guys have family out there. Stories like these will upset them if they see them. Please take the time to consider that.
He does not even look like Rory Storm. In fact, he looks nothing like him. Your imagination is running away here, try to consider that while it does that those closest to these guys may be hurt by such make believe.

  5. I don’t think the two photographs at the end are of the same person. When one looks at the brow line and the eyebrows themselves, this is clear. If one were to sketch a line simply following the brow line of each of the subjects, one could see that the shapes would not match.

  6. This world would be a better place if we executed people like this instead of saying ‘He didn’t know what he was doing’. So what? If he did it once he could do it again. He’s not worth allowing to continue living.
